Tom Raworth stands out as perhaps the quickest and most elusive, and at the same time most sensitive to contemporary realities of post-war poets in Britain. Tottering State brings back into print the 1984 selected published by Figures Press, adds new poems, and the entirety of Writing.

About Writing: Much of the poem turns on an opposition between the voice, which constantly places the self, and writing, which offers the possibility of a continual displacement ... Raworth's minimal line, with rarely more than four words and little punctuation, is crucially important to the process of unfreezing the frame, of cutting across the certainties of eye and larynx ... We continue to read poetry within a culture which gives central importance to literary tradition, and to recognizable divisions between writers and readers. Raworth's poetry makes an implicit Utopian demand for a culture without such divisions, or such a centre.
